The 6 Best Products for Curly Hair This Fall, According to Hairstylists

We’ve officially opened our arms to the perks of fall. But while switching up our wardrobe and our coffee order (it’s PSL season, baby), we realized that our hair deserves some new treatment too. The drop in temperature leaves us curly girls with dry locks, unmanageable frizz and split ends, so we reached out to a few hairstylists to get the scoop on their go-to products for fall. Here are six to add to your next wash day.

1. BEST SHAMPOO: OUIDAD CURL QUENCHER MOISTURIZING SHAMPOO
Angela, hairstylist at Curl Evolution in Babylon, New York, recommends Ouidad Curl Quencher Moisturizing Shampoo to nourish and rehydrate dry curls. This sulfate-free shampoo removes any dirt, dandruff and product build-up, and working just a nickel-size amount into your scalp does the trick. “Moisture is super important during fall and winter months because there is less hydration in the air. It’s important to implement moisturizing products into your routine to balance dryness and lock it in the hair,” she explains.

2. BEST LEAVE-IN CONDITIONER: OUIDAD MOISTURE LOCK LEAVE-IN CONDITIONER
Angela also enjoys the Ouidad Moisture Lock Leave-In Conditioner, a lightweight product that gives you the moisturizing boost your hair needs. It also gets your curls ready for the next step in your hair routine because it gives them the slip they need without weighing them down or feeling greasy.

3. BEST CONDITIONER RINSE: MOROCCANOIL SMOOTH CONDITIONER
A good conditioner is the real money maker when it comes to turning your curls into soft, shiny locks. Sophia, another hairstylist from Curl Evolution, reaches for Moroccanoil Smooth Conditioner to smooth curls and tame frizz—it also works to detangle, increase softness and strengthen hair. After shampooing (she recommends the Morroccanoil Smooth Shampoo), leave the conditioner on for a few minutes, then rinse.

4. BEST OIL: DEVACURL HIGH SHINE MULTI-BENEFIT OIL
No one likes frizz, so finding an oil that reduces one of curly hair’s biggest woes is a must. Mia Emilio, DevaChan senior stylist, is a big fan of the DevaCurl High Shine Multi-Benefit Oil to help improve the appearance of split ends. She says, “High Shine is perfect because this is the season we lose humidity. We need to stay hydrated in drier weather so it helps us keep our shine. It also helps fight against unwanted frizz.”

5. BEST STYLING GEL: DEVACURL ULTRA DEFINING GEL
“I suggest buying the products that are perfect regiment for your curl texture,” says Emilio. She also recommends another DevaCurl product, the Ultra Defining Gel, for definition and shine. The gel is great for enhancing shape, fighting frizz and increasing shine without the stickiness and crunchiness of a regular gel.

6. BEST STYLING CREAM: OLAPEX NO. 6 BOND SMOOTHER
If you only own one product, make it a styling cream. Its versatility is what makes it a must-have: With it, you can refresh curls and hydrate ends (even a couple days after your last wash). Christo Curlisto, hairstylist and owner of Christo Fifth Avenue, recommends Olapex No. 6 Bond Smoother in particular. He also notes that “Choosing curly hair products from drugstores are very tricky so I suggest that you avoid products that have heavy oil or waxes because they can cause build-up to your hair, suffocates follicles, and cause dryness to curls over time.”
